What can I do against the leather smell of my handbag?

Leather bags can smell awful, especially when they are new. Sometimes the smell is so bad that you can not even leave them in the room, simply because the smell makes the whole room stink. In this article, we cover a couple of solutions against a leather handbag that still has a strong leather smell.

Solutions against a smelling leather handbag

Before you start using all our tips and tricks, we want to point out that the smell of leather never goes away completely. Leather always has a smell to it. If you find that disturbing, then maybe a leather bag is not your thing.

There are a couple of things that you can do to make the smell a little less strong. There is not one solution that works in every case. If your leather handbag smells, then just try a couple of solutions until you find one that works. It can take a while, but hang in there, sooner or later you will be able to lose the worst of the smell with one of the following methods.

General notes
Never leave a leather bag in a closed space, like a closet. A leather bag needs open space to make it lose its smell. By giving the bag room to breathe, the strong smell will over time slowly leave the bag. If you leave it in a closed space, it will be surrounded by its own smell. If you are unlucky it will also cause all the other stuff in the same space to smell like your leather bag.

Hang the bag outside
Hanging the bag outside always helps. It will never get out the smell completely, but after a few days in the fresh air, you will definitely be able to get rid of the worst. Make sure that your bag can not get wet outside, because that damages the leather.

Coffee beans
Treating the leather bag with coffee beans always works good with leather bags that are painted in a certain color. Usually it is the paint on these bags that smells really bad. Put the handbag in a plastic bag and throw a bunch of coffee beans in there as well. Do not close the plastic bag! We still want fresh air to get in it. It can take up and about 1 or 2 weeks before the smell is gone, so be patient. Afterwards, your bag will smell like coffee a little bit, but that is still better than the awful leather and paint smell.

Odor eaters
If the smell comes from inside the bag, then odor eaters are probably the best solution. Put some odor eaters in your bag and that should solve the problem. Positive thing is that they do not take up a lot of space.

Put it in the freezer
Put the leather handbag in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer for a night. This is a method that you usually would use to kill bacteria in shoes that smell like sweat. But we have heard that it also works against a smelling leather bag.

We hope these tips and tricks can help you solve the problem. Good luck!
